Dallas Video Production – Documentary Style Infomercials for your Business

I had a potential client call me to ask about producing an infomercial for her company. In my mind, I was picturing a peppy pitchman, showing off a product to a live audience, in a 30 minute format, ready to broadcast. What she meant, was a short, 2 to 3 minute web video… an “informative commercial” or infomercial.

With the advent of YouTube and Vimeo, anyone can broadcast their story quite easily. No need to buy airtime, just click and upload. In ever increasing amount, we are being called upon to create this new breed of “infomercial” — the short web video.

The most common request is for a “documentary” style. Interviews supported by “B-Roll.” But as marketing directors try to differentiate themselves, we do some more creative video and film formats.

The “narrative” is like a mini-movie or feature film. It has actors and a plot. It might be funny or emotional, with the goal to get people to forward the link. This style has also worked extremely well for training– with the audience having much more retention than watching a lecture or a talking head video.

The “motion graphics” video is gaining a lot of steam. Usually, this has no shooting involved and our animators get to go all out. It can be 2D, “cell” type animation, or 3D like Toy Story. When you have a lot of info to tell your audience, this is a great way to grab their attention. In some case, we mix “live action” with animation, like this video here.

The “spokesperson” video is where an actor or company representative talks directly to the lens to impart the information.  Usually, the script is displayed on the teleprompter.  This works well when the president of the company is a dynamic speaker.  Or when you want a celebrity to tell your story.

 

As you can see, there are several different styles of the infomercial– none of which are selling a cleanser that can clean fire damage off a car hood.  It’s best to take a look at the message, your story, who your audience is, and what you want them to take away.  A younger audience might mean a faster paced video.  Or for a video targeting a group of employees that all know each other, inside jokes can make a huge difference.

 

Whatever the story is, find the style that most effectively tells your audience what you want them to hear and leaves the message long term in their minds.

dallas-video-production-service-wpI’ve been surprised lately to find out that our new clients left their old video production company because of a lack of service, or more often, just bad service. After all, the corporate video production industry is a service industry.

Our two greatest strengths are our ability to value add (bring to the table a lot of extras the clients weren’t expecting that add to the production value and efficiency of telling the story), and, as one client put it, we’re just nice guys. I believe life’s too short to engage in massive egos and work with people that are incredibly unhappy. So as we pull our team together, we look for those who approach difficult tasks with a positive attitude.

Over a dinner meeting one time with a new client, our point of contact brainstormed an idea for the upcoming video. I mentioned a couple ways we could do it and even improve on it. The client turned and said something to the agency rep and I asked what’s up. The agency rep then described how in the past, the production company would shoot all ideas not their own down and find excuses for how it just wouldn’t work. The client wasn’t used to a cooperative, collaborative position from their vendor. I really don’t understand why a video or film production company would ever take that position.

For our clients and potential clients, it’s your story. What can I do to make your story clearer, have more impact and be more effective? We’re in a service industry and what we do is a blast. We have fun along the way and find it even more fun when a client tells us about how successful the corporate video was.

We helped produce a series of videos for a gas and oil client. Over the course of the production, we became friends. In the end, we had lunch the other day, and all he could talk about was how far the videos exceeding their hopes and goals. The president of the company gave him a special award for pulling off the program that contained the videos. That brings the most satisfaction to us.

Service is business by relationship. Cliched. But true.

The 8 rotor helicopter can handle cameras up to 18 pounds, which makes it great for anything from a GoPro to DSLR’s to even a Red Epic.

RC Helicopters and small high quality cameras have opened giant doors for getting shots that before only very expensive cranes could do. The advantage is that in the past, for aerials, you had to rent a real helicopter with an expensive gyro mount, that could cost well over $1000/hour and most of the time more expensive than that. And the manned helicopters usually can’t fly under 500 feet for safety considerations.

The remote controlled helicopters are able to get those aerial shots in the sweet zone– 60 to 200 feet, where the dramatic sweeps make much more impact. In this YouTube video, focusing on the demolition of an interior bridge, you can get the classic high and wide aerial shot… but as you see, you can take an RC copter under the overpass and get dramatic shots, quickly, without having to roll in an expensive crane. And then you can get the shots that start at eye level and rise up significantly from there.

The camera is controlled by rotating the helicopter left or right and a gimball controls the tilt, up or down. With the larger, multi-rotor helicopters, the wind becomes less of a factor and the camera platform a little more stable. But most RC footage will need to be “stabilized” in post. With the octocopter, the footage is more stabilized so the shots are usually more stable than the small RC craft.

For remote controlled aircraft, your limitations are usually the amount of batteries you can carry and the distance between the aircraft and the controller.
